A couple hiking on state game land around a swamp stopped in the woods to listen and heard repeated series of loud, deep knocks from multiple directions and distances. They perceived the sounds as communication and felt uncomfortable enough to leave the area quickly. On the way back to the car they heard additional knocks from across the swamp and continued out without investigating the source.
Campers hear late night "banging" near Oroville
The witness and four companions camped overnight at Feather Falls campground and went to sleep around 1 AM. Sometime later while still dark, the witness heard rhythmic banging like a large branch struck against tree trunks from two separate distant locations, with patterns repeated back and forth and never overlapping. Companions who heard the sounds attributed them to a woodpecker, which the witness doubted because of the nighttime hour and irregular intervals. No vocalizations were heard.

A family hiking around a high-elevation lake above treeline near Leadville found footprint-like depressions in moss between glacial rocks and found additional depressions on further search. They also noted moss torn from boulders, chewed, and left in neat piles, and heard grouped rapping sounds on each of three visits over three days. They recorded the tracks and moss on video and made a cast of one track. No animal was seen.

In July 2002, the witness stopped on an isolated logging spur to pick blackberries and heard repeated loud wood-on-wood knocking from a ridge above. Believing no other people or vehicles were in the area, he chose not to climb the steep, dense slope to investigate and left after the sounds continued from one location. Two hikers returning up a dry creek bed in late afternoon smelled a strong foul odor and noticed a dead squirrel placed over a boot print. From a short distance away they heard loud banging like wood striking trees, saw treetops swaying, then heard very loud groaning and screaming vocalizations. The sounds paused while they walked away and resumed when they stopped, until they left the area.

The creatures vocalized and ran off when they noticed the witnesses, who briefly tried to follow before giving up.
