Couple hears loud wood knocks and responses in large nature reserve 20 miles north of Orlando

A couple parked off a dirt road in a Florida state reserve and walked around, turning back from a lower swampy area. After returning to a dirt path, they heard loud banging like hitting trees that alternated back and forth between two directions. They listened briefly, could not explain the purpose, then walked back to the car and left.
