In late fall 1997 the witness and her husband were camping in the Mt Adams Wilderness Area when around 4 a.m. they heard a loud strange vocalization from 800 to 1000 meters away. In the morning the coolers had been ransacked, and the pair left the campground early the next night after feeling uneasy.

The witness was archery hunting on a trail at dusk after separating from a companion to go different directions. After hearing an unfamiliar deep yelping sound and then loud wood-splintering, the witness saw a head-and-shoulders shape with no visible neck beyond a log. When the shape swiveled slightly, the witness backed away and returned quickly to the vehicle, visibly frightened.

After confirming all members were present, most of the group left early while about 10-15 stayed quietly until dawn as the sounds grew more distant.
