The witness and a friend were camping on the witness's family farm land and had a large fire going. Something began beating on a tree, with knocks that got closer, louder, and shook the ground. The witness knocked back on a tree, after which the sounds got very close and frightening, so they fled in a jeep and found nothing the next morning.

The guest and a neighbor drove up Hoodoo Mountain and made a distress call, then moved to a spur area and called again. Within minutes many voices were heard approaching from all directions with a dominant individual, frightening both women enough to leave quickly.

The witness was bow-hunting deer from a tree stand at dusk when deer ran through the creek below after a scream and thump. After climbing down to investigate, he smelled strong body odor, heard tapping and vocal sounds coming from two directions, and had acorn-like objects thrown at him. He then briefly saw a large dark figure watching him from cover before fleeing the area and never returning.

The witness and a companion were hunting raccoons at night with a hound that first treed a raccoon then pursued another animal through forest. After the dog returned frightened and stayed close, the pair tried to walk out in darkness with failing lights. For an hour or two they heard something large circling them with heavy footfalls and crashing vegetation and small trees breaking nearby, but they never saw the source.

In early autumn at mid-day the witness was burning damp feed sacks behind a bunkhouse when a flare-up was followed by a startled sound behind him. He turned and saw a tall reddish-brown biped run upright into virgin woods and disappear within seconds. He later returned with a gun for safety but found no tracks because of leaves and ground clutter.

The witness was bow hunting and walking a fire trail near dark when he found a large human-shaped footprint and photographed it and the surrounding woods. While photographing he noticed a strong layered odor of sour sweat, decaying flesh and musk. After walking back to his truck after dark, something growled at close range for 1-2 seconds, but a flashlight search revealed nothing and he left to develop the film.

While hunting elk at dusk, the witness and a companion climbed out of a draw and surprised a tall black hair-covered creature about 30 feet away. The creature made a loud whoof sound as it moved into a small stand of pines, displacing a bough. After the pair backed away, it gave a low guttural growl ending with teeth clicking, frightening them enough to leave.

Vocalizations heard by expeditioners on Olympic Peninsula

On the first night of an October 2004 expedition, four participants walked a stretch of mountain road making wood knocks. They heard deep grunting sounds from the woods, then later heard two loud scream-like vocalizations from different sides of the road, one a few hundred yards away and one within about 50 yards. They stated the screams started as a low moan and rose to a high-pitched screech and were unlike any known local animal sounds.

Two relatives camped alone at a riverside campground, one in a tent and one in a van. During the night they heard loud calling sounds from across the river and later heard movement around the campsite, including grunt-like sounds beside the van. In the morning they compared notes, confirmed no other campers were present, and found no tracks due to hard ground.

On June 5th 2004 the witness was leading a group at a large archaeological site when the witness struck a large branch against a dry pine to try calling a response. No response was heard at the time. About four hundred yards along the exit trail the group found a dead grouse placed in the middle of the trail with wings tucked, still slightly warm, interpreted as a fresh placement similar to an earlier find.

The witness parked her truck near Lake Oroville before sunrise to photograph valley lights. While sitting with the driver window down, she heard a loud angry roar that rapidly approached from behind and stopped at the rear passenger side of the truck. She saw nothing in the darkness and drove away frightened.

Hunters hear vocalizations

Two men camped overnight in a wooded hill area. After they went to bed, the man awake in his tent heard a strange loud whooping vocalization that seemed to come down a ridge toward camp, get very close, then move away behind them. He tried to look outside but saw nothing and noted the woods were unusually quiet with no brush or twig sounds. His companion slept through the whole episode.

Elk hunter hears loud screams at night near Deadman's Lake

The witness backpacked to Deadman's Lake for a one-night stay during elk season. Before dark he heard a distant howl, then at about 11:24 p.m. he was awakened by a loud high-pitched screaming howl from the meadow next to his camp. He opened the tent with a light and camera but saw nothing and did not hear the sound again, though nearby owls called afterward. In the morning he searched and found only elk and no unusual sign before packing out as weather turned.

Elk hunter hears rhythmic calling

The witness and two companions were hunting deer and elk around a large meadow in the evening. While waiting on a trail for elk to be pushed, the witness heard a rhythmic, low, hollow whistle-like alarmed call move across a field for about ten to fifteen minutes without seeing any source. After the sound stopped the witness walked down to join a companion and heard it again briefly from across the trail, which the companion was unsure he heard. A third hunter who had already returned to the vehicle said he had not reached the field and had heard nothing.

The witness was awakened around 3 a.m. by very loud, clear repetitive whooping calls near the house, with a second more distant caller responding. Around 4-4:15 a.m. the calls resumed louder and closer, alarming the dog, prompting the witness to check sheep, goats and chickens with a flashlight and see nothing, after which the calls stopped. The witness could not match the sound to any known local animal.

Family and friends hear a late night vocalization from their home near Lake Sutherland

The witness reports a very loud simultaneous whistle, scream and growl coming from about 70 feet across the road from the cabin. The sound was heard by the witness and five other people and was described as unlike any known animal. An investigator later interviewed the witness and companions about the vocalization and noted inconclusive evidence in the area.

From about 10 feet away they heard loud cracking in brush and saw it moving violently, then heard and felt two or three extremely heavy steps moving away. They saw no animal but concluded something very large, fast and heavy had been startled nearby.

The witness pulled an RV with a trailer onto a wide spot on a campground entrance road at night to sleep. While outside checking the trailer hitch before bed, he heard a snorting rumbling sound he associated with sounds heard on TV or the internet. He went back inside the RV, reported no further activity once inside, and did not mention it to his companion until a week later.

Hunter experiences sounds, smell, rock throwing

The witness went to wait along a bear trail in the evening during archery season and felt watched. A strong pungent odor unlike bear was noticed, then a large rock was thrown from upslope toward the witness with a very loud scream. The witness left the area and believed they were followed partway back to their vehicle.

Howls heard, creature seen running through woods

The witness's husband was walking on their property in the afternoon when a loud scream or howl stopped him. He tried to locate the source and then charged to flush it from tall brush. He caught only brief glimpses of a dark, crouched form running in a zigzag pattern before it disappeared. He later thought it was primate-like and said it matched a howl heard on a television documentary.
