From just inside the woodline a short distance away he heard repeated loud thwacks like wood striking a tree, about ten times over a few minutes and sounding progressively more distant. It was pitch dark so he saw nothing, and he heard no footsteps or brush noise despite dense woods. The next morning he searched the area in daylight and found no sign.
