The source moved around them with audible footsteps in snow and breaking branches, seeming to flank them and get behind them. After several minutes they left the area quickly while looking back and did not return.

The dogs behaved unusually and the witness felt terror, concluding the source was not a known dog or coyote, a view reinforced by later failure to match the sound to recorded wolf sounds and by nearby residents reporting similar howls.
