Two companions grouse hunting in a wooded gorge heard loud screaming-growl vocalizations from about 30 yards away in dense cover. The source moved around them with audible footsteps in snow and breaking branches, seeming to flank them and get behind them. After several minutes they left the area quickly while looking back and did not return.

About a year later the witness heard an internet recording of supposed vocalizations that felt identical, then played it by phone for the companion who had the same reaction.
