Late at night the guest and a companion knocked on trees and threw a stick on the trail edge, then heard and saw large movement in bushes. They walked to the riverbed where the air turned sharply cold. By light they glimpsed a huge black furry mass across the river that vanished, then heard calls on both sides and a long echoing howl, followed by a strange whimper while walking back through a field.
