After exiting the vehicle he heard loud howls and ape-like grunts from the woods that he perceived as very large and threatening. He shouted back, heard closer howling responses suggesting two animals, then retreated backward to his house with a firearm. He watched from inside but reported no further sights or sounds.

Around midnight they heard a huge splash as something jumped into deep water and waded across toward them with bipedal splashes. It stopped at the bank in darkness for a long silent period, then circled the camp staying just beyond firelight before leaving up the hillside. They waited until sunrise without sleep and hiked out without checking for tracks.

A large black biped emerged from woods on the right and sprinted across the eastbound lanes in about two strides, passing in front of a semi and entering the wooded median, while the wife watched it continue across the westbound lanes.
