Two people hunting deer near a creek crossing watched a shape first mistaken for a stump move, crouch, stand upright and stretch. The witness observed through a rifle scope an apelike face and hair-covered body moving along the creek for about ten minutes. As they backed away, a growl and a single loud scream were heard from its direction before it ran and leapt across the creek, after which the pair left.

The witness was hunting alone on foot in the morning when he heard repeated groups of rapid wood-on-wood impacts ahead of him. The witness, familiar with local wildlife sounds, said it matched no known animal and later compared it to a gorilla roar.

The guest, then 19, was scouting for deer behind a rented house in October 1989 and set a homemade 10-foot ladder stand along a deer run. The witness was hunting and walking back to a vehicle when they heard noises in brush and across a field. They crouched in brush and saw a large dark brown creature crouching across the field, which then stood erect, grunted, raised its left arm, and walked back into the woods. They shone a flashlight on it, saw a huge hand raised to its face, and watched it approach to about 25 yards. They fled to a ladder stand, then heard it running and a violent fight with another unseen animal that ended with a splash in the river, after which they waited until daylight to leave.
