They saw the dark silhouette of a tall figure walking past, with only the top half visible above the treetops. The witness was hunting alone in a forested creek bottom when a bedded deer flushed into tall reeds. From higher ground above the reeds he saw a tall dark mottled figure moving upright across the creek about 50 yards away. The figure turned to look at him, showing a hump on its back, then pushed swiftly through dense vegetation without dodging. The witness left the area and later confirmed no other hunters or vehicles were nearby.

After evening-shooting a large deformed buck that ran into the woods, the guest returned at dawn and crawled into a low briar tunnel to follow blood. A tremendous growl vibrated through him, heavy stomping approached, and a towering shadow loomed over his back with visible flexing fingers. He talked calmly while backing out, then fled. Two days later he found only the deer's ripped-off head with crumbling bone.

While culling deer after his grandfather died, the guest sat on a stump and twice saw a big black shape swaying behind a small tree. On the second sit a squirrel erupted loudly to one side with sounds like hand-slapping mimicry while the shape appeared closer, prompting him to leave the woods.
