Possible Wood Knock Interaction at Wildcat Ridge near Rockaway
The witness and a companion were hiking toward a lookout in the early afternoon when they heard distant wood knocks from the east. The witness knocked back while the companion made an audio recording, noting louder nearby knocks and fainter distant single knocks. Just before the exchange they also heard a sound like a tree or large limb crashing to the ground.

On Jan 14, the witness and his girlfriend hiked from the field across the creek to an old skidder trail. There they found large, widely spaced footprints in deep crunchy snow that the witness could only match at a semi-run and that crossed a fallen log without disturbing the snow on top. Nearby they saw a tree with bark stripped all around the lower five feet. Feeling unsafe, they stopped investigating and left the area.
Possible encounter while backpacking in the Hoosier National Forest
Three people were camped overnight in a valley when they heard a deep growl followed by a howl. They then heard large branches or trees snapping and being thrown toward camp, followed by sounds of a small animal in distress and then silence. Finally they heard something large running away through the woods, breaking branches and rustling leaves. They saw nothing in the darkness and could not identify the source.

On a cool afternoon in February 2007, the witness and a companion hiked in the woods to look for clues about strange activity. They reported finding large human-like footprints, possible bedding areas, territorial tree markings, and a freshly fallen oak with bark that looked chewed and wet. While leaving the woods they reported being followed by something unseen that produced howls and other vocals, stick-beating sounds, continuing footsteps, and moving vegetation.

The witness was hiking alone on a section of the Appalachian Trail when footsteps began pacing him from off-trail to his left. He glimpsed a dark figure and then rocks began flying past him, prompting him to jog and then sprint toward a road. The pursuer kept pace while breaking saplings and trees before stopping near the road, after which the witness calmed down and returned to his car.

The witness was deer hunting on a friend's wooded property in Pennsylvania during buck season in 2005. From a ridge he watched a single hairy biped for about 10 to 12 minutes as it broke a small pine tree, investigated the stump, and appeared to eat ants from a rotten stump. The creature sniffed the air, showed no aggression, then walked away apparently unaware of the witness. The witness noted an apparent left arm injury and described the animal as about his own height, thin, and more human-like than expected.

A group of seven hikers were hiking on a mountain trail in the afternoon. They heard cackling, yelping, growling and moaning sounds and found the trail blocked by a large uprooted stump with placed boulders and smashed trees. Two upright figures, one black and one light brown and hairy, were seen moving parallel to the group and leaping down a cliff, while the group felt stalked and watched as they hurried out to the road.

They estimated the prints were about a day old and also noted scarred trees and broken branches in the area. Three companions were walking a little-used logging trail north of North Bay near dusk when they found two barefoot-like half prints at the edge of a large puddle. The prints were described as human-like with five toes but about twice the width of the witness's own foot, with no other tracks around. Earlier on the same walk they had seen a small healthy tree snapped off high above the ground, and afterward they noticed bent trees that resembled a sleeping spot, though they discounted both.

Two people were shining lights for alligators beside a lake at night when vegetation beside the dock shook and repeated knocking like wood hitting a tree was heard. A nearby tree then fell, and as they ran toward safety they heard heavy steps and grunting keeping pace parallel to them. About an hour later they returned and found a tall tree freshly snapped about eight feet up with dripping sap and a hair on a branch.

The witness and a companion camped in thick woods and settled in their tent for the night. After about an hour they heard loud thuds like heavy footsteps circling the campsite and limbs breaking, approaching within a few feet of the tent. They then heard deep gorilla-like grunts before the sounds moved away toward a creek, and they remained in the tent frightened until daylight without seeing anything.

The witness camped in a forested swamp area after dusk and reported hearing large animals moving around the camp in a triangular pattern, breaking branches and knocking on trees, including between the camp and a nearby vehicle. Later that night with others present, the witness reported a strange gurgling sound followed by a prolonged bout of tree knocking. The witness suggested the sounds implied dexterous animals and doubted humans could move that quickly in the dark swamp.

After hearing wood knocks and tree breaks for several minutes, he spotted a tall figure about 200 yards away and viewed it through a rifle scope, describing an 8-foot upright figure with a flat face that smelled the air then ran off on two legs. He climbed down, found a large five-toed human-like track where it had slid, heard whoops from two directions, and left the area.

After the dog returned frightened and stayed close, the pair tried to walk out in darkness with failing lights. For an hour or two they heard something large circling them with heavy footfalls and crashing vegetation and small trees breaking nearby, but they never saw the source.

Two companions were building a squirrel-hunting blind at the edge of the woods when a dead tree they had been unable to push over cracked and fell. They then saw a tall, upright, hair-covered figure standing nearby. The pair quickly left the area and ran home.

The witness was grading a remote forest road around noon when he spotted a large hairy creature about 200 yards ahead standing by the road and looking at him. After watching for about a minute, the creature crossed the road in three steps and disappeared into the woods. The witness drove to the crossing point and found large human-like footprints and broken branches, left food and water, and found them untouched on his return pass.

The witness was hiking back toward the day-use lot in light rain after walking to the west end of the lake with a companion. After scuffing a foot on gravel, the witness heard a loud grunt and a large branch snap uphill, then saw a large reddish-brown hairy form crouched by a fallen tree about 40-50 ft away, partly hidden by undergrowth. The form stood, held an arm across the face area, looked back once, and left quickly and silently upright without dropping to all fours.

About an hour later the witness heard a loud boom close to the tent. Two mornings later he found a fresh green pine snapped at its base on the boulders near camp, which he inferred was pushed over by the animal that made the sounds.
