The witness pulled to the side of a road near woods and a river around 9 p.m. to relieve himself. The accompanying dog began growling and barking, and the witness saw a very large figure cross the road in about two steps and disappear into the woods about 30 yards away. When the witness walked toward the spot with the dog and a flashlight, the dog refused to advance, a strong musky smell was noticed, and cracking sounds in the vegetation moved toward them, prompting the witness to return to the car and drive away.

The witness and a companion were walking on a service road when they noticed an animal crouched at a swampy area drinking. The animal turned toward them, stood upright on two legs, and maintained eye contact for about 10 to 15 seconds. The witness and a relative were camping on a rural forested property and getting ready for bed when they heard a long harsh yowl close to the campsite and heard something moving. The witness and his wife sat on his truck tailgate at a power-line clearing late at night when they heard snorting, brush breaking, and a loud growl/grunt moving up a steep hill toward them. The witness saw a large shadow moving on the slope in moonlight, heard breathing and stomping, and smelled a musky sour odor. After revving the truck engine the sounds crashed rapidly downhill, and the pair left, seeing deer run across the road as they drove out.

Two hikers returning up a dry creek bed in late afternoon smelled a strong foul odor and noticed a dead squirrel placed over a boot print. From a short distance away they heard loud banging like wood striking trees, saw treetops swaying, then heard very loud groaning and screaming vocalizations. The sounds paused while they walked away and resumed when they stopped, until they left the area.

Two boys were playing near a creek valley across from a house and waded into the water after hearing movement in the brush. One of them noticed a large very dark brown monkey- or gorilla-like creature watching them from behind bushes on the far bank. After staring for what seemed a minute, both fled uphill and watched it moving through the brush in an upright walk.

The witness and a companion had finished hog hunting and were talking with the check-station attendant about an hour after dark when they heard several loud, high-pitched screams lasting several seconds from woods behind the station, followed by brief sounds of vegetation movement. The group, all familiar with local animal sounds, could not identify the source and agreed it did not match bobcat, hog, bird, or small prey. Shaken by the intensity, the brothers left the area.

The witness drove to a Blue Ridge Parkway overlook on Halloween night to clear his head and walked down a trail to a bench. After noticing unnatural silence and hearing branch snaps circling him, he returned to his car. While sitting in the car he heard repeated impacts like cones hitting the vehicle and saw tall black hooded figures in the treeline and prone shapes on the grass that appeared closer each time he looked away, with faint flickering lights near their faces. He spoke to them, then drove away, later finding no damage and noticing maps show the turnout on the opposite side of the road from his memory.

Two brothers were deer hunting and walking the center of a dark highway back toward town at night. Two unseen animals on opposite sides of the road screamed repeatedly, closed distance, and paralleled their movement. The men stood back to back, shouted warnings, and fired rifles until the sounds stopped and headlights appeared.

At sunrise the group found very large footprints leading from the water into the trees.

The witness and a relative were camping overnight when they heard a loud whooping sound nearby followed by loud crunching like branches breaking. A girl was heard screaming after the whooping. In the morning they found large footprints near their tent measuring about 12 to 16 inches long, which they felt were too large for a bear.

The witness and a friend were watching TV late at night when their pet goose became agitated and they heard branches breaking outside. They took flashlights outside and watched an ape-like animal crouched at the woods edge across the street for about 10 minutes, noting its long hair, eye color, and behavior in the lights. When they went inside briefly to get car keys for headlights, the animal had disappeared.

The witness heard splashing described as running through shallow water, then later saw a large dark-haired figure in a swampy area that quickly disappeared into the woods. The companion did not see the figure but saw branches moving.

A team of four was conducting a nighttime sound survey from a clear-cut overlooking a river valley while one member did a live radio interview from a parked vehicle near the treeline. The interviewer heard repeated charging sounds, footfalls and a grunt-growl from dense brush a few feet away while two teammates uphill watched with a night-vision device. The uphill observers reported a huge 8-foot-plus figure about 25 feet away leaning side to side to look through the trees and moving its arms. The episode lasted about 30 minutes, followed later by a distant scream, and a next-day search found disturbed soil but no footprints.
