Backpacker hears multiple vocalizations while camping near Trout Lake
The witness was camped alone on the second night of a three-day backpacking trip in Gifford Pinchot National Forest. At about 2:30 a.m. he was awakened by three consecutive whooping yells followed by a loud three-second guttural scream from up the valley. He then heard very faint distant answering calls or howling. He stayed awake for a couple more hours and heard nothing further.

Three people camped on an island area at Keystone Lake and heard repeated grunting and howl-like vocalizations after midnight. After two people kayaked back to the cars and two returned, the two in kayaks had two very large rocks land in the water near them as they approached shore in darkness. One had earlier seen green eyeshine near the campsite on the first return. Finding no other people on the island, they packed up and left during the night.

The witness was sitting with two companions around a fire behind the house near a wooded swamp late at night. They repeatedly heard a long whoop-like growling sound from the woods but saw nothing. The first occurrence was in late summer 2008, and similar sounds were heard again in March 2009.

The witness and his father took a harvested deer to another cabin at night to dress it. While the witness was cleaning the deer, a loud rising whoop followed by three shorter whoops was heard from beyond the cabin and lasted several seconds. They later heard a very large animal moving away breaking branches, found no sign after sunrise, and left to hunt elsewhere.

The sounds lasted about a minute and unnerved both hunters. The witness did not enter the brush and later returned without further incident.

The husband searched with lights and briefly saw movement in the trees about 30 feet away, including what looked like a large dark lower leg. While inside the trailer the wife heard two to three whooping sounds from that wooded area.

A very loud, sustained howl rising from low to high pitch was heard at very close range, ending in a hoop-like sound, followed by silence. The witness and two teenagers hiked in and made camp for the night. Starting about 2100 they heard repeated high-pitched whoops, first from the north and later from the south, continuing intermittently into the night. No animals, people, or tracks were seen during the stay or hike out.

When the witness shone a flashlight toward the treeline, something nearby fled at a jog, producing audible heavy footsteps. The companion later reported hearing another more distant vocalization, and a morning search found no clear tracks in dense underbrush.
