After acquiring the property the witness's family spent summer weeks there and repeatedly heard loud knocking from woods behind a lake several hundred yards away. The knocks occurred often in summer, typically starting a couple hours before sunset and continuing after dark. In contrast, during winter camping trips the witness never heard such knocks.

The witness was fishing with five other boys near a house on Rolland Road when a breaking-log sound drew attention to a large dark hairy biped crouching in the woods east of the road.
