In complete darkness he heard sounds like a vehicle and approaching steps, felt the bridge shake from heavy impacts, heard a branch move and a brief powerful scream, and nearly shot a neighbor who rode up on a bicycle. He realized the neighbor had not made the sounds and drove home without returning to the woods.
