Appalachian Trail Hikers find possible tracks and hear a late night howl near Franklin
Two people on a backpacking trip camped for the night and heard a long two-toned howl after midnight, followed by distant whoops over about two hours. The next day while hiking they found large deep human-like footprints crossing the trail at two gaps, with about five-foot stride, plus piled limbs in tree forks and overturned mushrooms nearby. They photographed the prints and noted a bloody stick but did not keep it.

At about 2 a.m. during a break in a storm, the witness heard something at the backyard wire fence and went outside armed with a relative. They heard footsteps and loud cracks first mistaken for gunfire and fired weapons toward the sound. The cracking was then recognized as wood splitting as a huge tree was pushed over, crashing down and shaking the house, after which the family heard loud footfalls running away.

During an afternoon walk on a game trail a few hundred yards from camp, the witness encountered a large hairy biped and stared at it briefly before it walked away. The witness shot a deer at dusk and dragged it toward his truck after dark. On the trail he saw a widely spaced pair of large eyes at about his own height that stayed after he fired a handgun into the ground, then left to the side through dense brush with loud crashing. He smelled a foul musky odor and found pushed-over vegetation where it left, felt watched while field-dressing the deer, and later found part of the carcass dragged about 300 yards.

The next day they returned and found very large tracks in the snow leading from and back into nearby woods, with tracks around a tree with stripped branches. They did not see the source of the sound and report no further experiences since.

On a November 1976 afternoon two young men hunting squirrels walked toward a river when a large hairy biped came up from the river bottom toward them. It stopped about 30 feet away, looked at them, snapped a small dead tree and vocalized. The pair retreated over a ridge and ran, later discussing whether it had been a person in costume.
