Residents reported a hair-covered animal sometimes upright and sometimes moving on all fours at racehorse speed with a leaping stride. Heavy steel bear traps set and wired to an oak were found sprung with bait eaten, wire snapped, ground torn, and traps dragged rods away. Later explanations blaming a dog or disguised man were followed by continued reports.

Two hunters entered an isolated canyon noted for murders and saw a large hairy biped moving upright. After it turned to show a human-like face, they shot it. They then found a dug cave containing human bones and animal remains.
