The witness, then age eight, was walking east along railroad tracks with a nine-year-old companion picking up rocks when they smelled a strong distinct odor near a bridge over a river. While crossing the bridge the companion pointed over the south side, and the witness saw a dark-brown fur-covered ape-like figure with very massive shoulders crouching on the east bank about twenty feet below looking into the water. After watching for about five to seven seconds, the two children ran east to the companion's home.
