In late May 2005 the witness and a companion waited in dense woods by a river after dark. After the witness imitated howls, something within about 200 yards answered with repeated loud deep growls, followed by about a minute of chattering from two directions. Later the witness struck a tree with a stick and heard similar loud banging from across the river for one to two minutes. The pair heard nothing else except insects and coyotes, and never saw the sources.

The witness had gone to bed in his hunting cabin late Friday night when the forest went quiet and then heard a very loud scream from the southwest answered from the southeast. A radio check confirmed the hiking group had not passed anyone, and when group members later stood at the same spot they looked much smaller and bulkier than the figures.

After fishing until daylight they walked the creek and found two large barefoot-like prints in a sandbar near disturbed mussels, leading up an embankment into dense thorns.

After about an hour they heard loud thuds like heavy footsteps circling the campsite and limbs breaking, approaching within a few feet of the tent. They then heard deep gorilla-like grunts before the sounds moved away toward a creek, and they remained in the tent frightened until daylight without seeing anything.

The driver claimed a dark upright figure stood in the middle of the highway in the early morning and did not move when honked at. The driver swerved to miss the figure at close range, left the highway and rolled into the woods. Emergency responders found the driver still in the car, who described the encounter after regaining consciousness.

They reported no sighting, odor, or footprints, and nearby hikers with dogs showed no unusual reaction.
