Three friends were on a late-night bike ride and had stopped to talk by a pond. They noticed a tall tan-or-gray figure standing behind a tree in the darkness. As they approached, the figure moved bipedally across the path toward the woods and one witness saw it glance back. The group followed to the wood line and heard movement in the branches for a short time before silence.
02/15/04 Rensselaer County, NY: Vocalizations, with Tracks Found the Next Day
Late at night a resident went onto the porch after the outside dog became highly agitated and heard continuous loud shrieking screams, which the spouse also heard. The next morning footprints were found in deep snow leading across a field toward the forest with long strides, and a second set was reported to join the first in the woods. After investigating, the pair heard a heavy bipedal approach pass close behind camp, prompting them to leave for the cabin. The next day the witness found a large footprint and a freshly fallen tree.

Two deer hunters walking a creek bottom heard movement paralleling them on a deer trail, then saw a figure moving bipedally through the woods about 60 yards away. They watched it cross the creek, climb the banks, and run along a power line into pines where the sounds eventually stopped. They tried to backtrack it but lost sign beyond a farm pond.

The witness was traveling on a road late at night with a companion slightly behind. Near a forested area, something very large and fast ran out in front of the witness on two legs, with one hand held forward and apparently carrying something in the other. Conditions were very dark with light fog and drizzle.

They heard a series of loud screams unlike any known animal, followed by something large running through the woods and breaking branches. The witness and a companion were in bed talking in the early morning when they heard a distant loud howl/moan that rose in pitch for several seconds. The sound repeated a second time slightly longer, with an echo afterward. The witness said it did not sound mechanical, like a siren, or like a known animal such as a wolf or coyote.

Two people were sitting on a porch late at night when they noticed a tall figure covered in hair moving along the road. The figure moved upright with very long strides and swinging arms, looking straight ahead without turning toward them. It was out of sight within seconds while faint footfalls were heard.

The witness and a relative were camping on a rural forested property and getting ready for bed when they heard a long harsh yowl close to the campsite and heard something moving. When the witness shone a flashlight toward the sound, it stopped and seemed to move away without being seen. No physical evidence was found, and the sound was provisionally dismissed as a coyote although the witness doubts that explanation.

The witness and his wife had gone to bed at their seasonal camp when the witness, who stayed awake, heard cycles of loud screams. The screams sounded first from a distance, then very close on the property, then again from a distance at a third location, each cycle consisting of several evenly spaced wails. The sounds were described as loud, female-like and frightening, with no accompanying movement noises, and the wife awoke during the close cycle.

The witness reports hearing repeated wood-on-wood knocking for about an hour in the middle of the night. The pattern is described as three strikes followed by a pause, repeating. One other person heard the sounds at the same time, and both questioned who would be making such noise at that hour.
Unusual events at remote family cabin near Keene Valley, NY
Late at night in fall 2003 the witness walked about 25 feet from the remote cabin to the tree line to relieve himself. He heard very loud heavy stomping or bounding from about 25 yards away at the base of a hillside that shook the ground and stopped after a few seconds when he turned toward it. He saw nothing further, felt uneasy, and went back inside and locked the cabin.

The witness was indoors in the evening when distant howls were heard behind the house. About an hour later a very loud screaming howl was heard from just outside an open but blind-covered window. The witness felt paralyzed with fear and did not look out. Afterwards a relative's dog was found cowering in a corner having defecated, and it stayed hidden the rest of the night.

The witness was camping in a tent near Sabathday Point and stepped outside in the early morning to make a phone call. After the call he heard a noise and saw a large hairy human-shaped figure about 60 feet away walking up a slight incline. He watched for about five seconds, noted it lacked a bear-like snout, then ran back to the tent to tell his companions.

Two companions grouse hunting in a wooded gorge heard loud screaming-growl vocalizations from about 30 yards away in dense cover. The source moved around them with audible footsteps in snow and breaking branches, seeming to flank them and get behind them. After several minutes they left the area quickly while looking back and did not return.

In September 2000 the witness was near home bordering extensive forest when a long howl was heard approaching from a distance at dusk. The witness went into the woods with two dogs, a spotlight and a weapon to intercept what was first assumed to be a hunter's dog, but saw no hunter lights while the sound moved rapidly to within about 120 yards on the same level. The dogs behaved unusually and the witness felt terror, concluding the source was not a known dog or coyote, a view reinforced by later failure to match the sound to recorded wolf sounds and by nearby residents reporting similar howls.
A bicyclist's daylight, partial sighting of a large animal with a rancid smell
The witness was riding a bike on a country road in the morning when a very strong rancid smell was noticed. A patch of brown fur was glimpsed ahead about six feet off the ground moving back into the woods, with no road crossing seen. A chained dog across the road was barking toward the woods and appeared agitated. On riding past the spot again shortly after, the smell was gone and nothing further was seen or heard.

A couple left the trail to take photos by a creek. They heard loud deep roaring, scream-like and growl-like vocalizations approaching from across the creek, along with large branches breaking, and believed something was circling them. After the sounds stopped they felt watched, fled down the trail, and heard a large animal tracking them along the creek.

Frightened, they gathered their belongings and ran back down the trail while the animal tracked them from alongside the creek.
