Around 2:55 a.m. the witness was awakened by footsteps circling the tent and stopping behind his head, then realized the companion was still inside his own tent. When the witness moved to go outside, the unseen visitor crashed away through trees toward the river. Neither camper saw anything, and both reported feeling watched all night.

As a paperboy delivering newspapers in Eldridge in early February 1981, the witness found very large human-like footprints in snow crossing the town from northeast to southwest, and found a second set retracing the route in reverse the next morning. Years later after watching television programs, the witness concluded the sounds were likely made by a bigfoot.
