Wood knocking and tree shaking noticed while deer hunting
In fall 1987 the witness was archery hunting with a relative in Michigan when wood-on-wood knocking was heard to the west. About 15 minutes later a nearby small pine shook violently from side to side with no animal visible. The witness left the area for lunch shortly afterward and noted no odor.

The witness was hunting alone from a climbing stand on the middle bench of a hillside. He heard two knocks from a tree to the west near the hilltop, then about 45 seconds later heard another knock from low behind him. He saw nothing and heard nothing else.

Two companions rode an ATV to a clearing by a lake and built a large fire at night. Over the evening they heard deliberate footfalls, pacing and stick breaks in the treeline about sixty yards away and noticed the woods go silent. After the witness knocked on a tree and made a whoop call, they heard knocks in reply and then a long deep guttural growl. They rode toward the sound without seeing anything, then put out the fire and left feeling watched and frightened.

He then heard groups of three to four wood knocks in quick succession, repeated several times over two to three minutes from a wooded area a few hundred yards away. After hearing distant screams that seemed to shift position and prolonged branch-breaking around camp, the witness stayed awake listening while others slept. The witness heard heavy running and breathing pass the RV and noticed moonlight through the windows dim briefly, then later the companion's son fled his tent to the RV reporting tree-banging, movement, darkness at the tent, and a voice imitation. No one saw anything, and the next morning knocking elicited whistle replies from the woods.
