Three hunters camped in a river bottom over the opening weekend of bow season. Over several days and nights they reported heavy impacts, rustling, a skunk-like odor, red eyeshine, wood knocks, whistles, talk-like mumbling, a whoop-ending vocalization, and bent trees and branch structures. The most intense moment was a predawn episode with a deep guttural roar followed by a scream-like sound near camp. They left early after smelling the odor again near a plum thicket.

The relative pointed out stacked rock piles and later led the witness to a spot among trees described as a den, containing packed branches, reddish-brown hair tufts, feathers, and a strong decay-like odor. They noticed a strong foul odor and an unusual silence, became frightened, and ran back to the house. The next morning they returned and found an area of flattened brush and a very large footprint in damp soil nearby, which they photographed in black-and-white before having to leave.

The witness and a companion hiked through a creek bed to a long-visited spot in the woods. They found a large area where tall weeds and trees had been matted down into a bed-like clearing with outer vegetation bent outward. While examining it they heard heavy bipedal footsteps and breaking twigs approaching through dense foliage but could not see the source. They retreated to the road while the unseen source followed at a distance, staying about 100 feet away.

No creature was reportedly seen clearly, and the interpretation as possible Sasquatch activity developed over later years.

In late July 1974 the witness walked with his parents and dog south along a trail toward thick woods. As they walked they heard loud cracks, pops and snaps from the treeline that seemed to parallel their movement, smelled rotten garbage, and the dog became fearful. Near the site of a previously found stick shelter they heard a tree snap and crash nearby, then turned back while snapping sounds seemed to follow them to the clearing.

In mid-summer 1970 the witness was driving along the Sandy River looking for a place to target shoot when he found saplings snapped off with the tops formed into a large bedding area. Nearby were several freshly gutted rabbits, a death-like smell, and unusually silent woods. He left to find a ranger station and returned with a ranger who photographed the site, after which both described themselves as becoming believers.
