The witness and a relative were camping overnight near a lake in the mountains when loud echoing screams woke them around 2 a.m. The witness managed to record the last two of several screams using a parabolic microphone and tape recorder. Nearby dogs reacted unusually, other campers also heard the sounds, and tree limbs were heard breaking about half an hour later.

After exchanging wood knocks with an unseen source to the south, the witness heard slow cautious bipedal footsteps approach and a loud splash in the channel separating the islands, followed later by fainter steps retreating. The witness and a companion were hiking toward a lookout in the early afternoon when they heard distant wood knocks from the east. The witness knocked back while the companion made an audio recording, noting louder nearby knocks and fainter distant single knocks. After waiting, they heard a prolonged clamor of fighting coyotes uphill with a distinct human- or ape-like yowling mixed in lasting about 45 seconds. In July 2002, the witness stopped on an isolated logging spur to pick blackberries and heard repeated loud wood-on-wood knocking from a ridge above. On the night of October 28, 2000 the witness was hosting an adult-only backyard barbecue party with about a dozen guests. Around 10 p.m. the group heard loud unidentified sounds from the woods near the back of the property and heard heavy footsteps breaking branches that sounded bipedal. Two men entered the woods with a flashlight but the source stayed distant and was never seen, and no tracks were found in deep oak leaves.

The father fired a handgun from a loft window and later used a spotlight, hearing something move away upslope but never seeing the source. Similar late-night screams recurred several times over the following week, and daytime searches found broken small trees and a rotten-egg smell but no tracks or other samples. The family moved away within a month.

The witness was bow-hunting deer alone from a makeshift blind at a clearing near a power-line cut. From inside the woods he heard loud branch and log breaking sounds together with strange slurred chatter-like vocalizations lasting a few minutes, then silence. He walked toward the area with bow drawn but could not penetrate the dense brush, and companions hunting elsewhere reported nothing unusual. These included trees reportedly moved to block trails, an elaborate woven arch structure, large human-like footprints with long strides, rocks and a branch thrown near the witness, loud clicking exchanges, and nighttime disturbances around the barn and house. No creature was reportedly seen clearly, and the interpretation as possible Sasquatch activity developed over later years.

On a fall evening just before dusk, the witness, then a child, and the father were at their farm when the father heard a loud disturbance in a wooded valley below a field. The father took a tape recorder and walked toward the sounds of a loud growling/roaring creature apparently fighting a neighbor's dog while the child waited uphill by a feed trough. The creature was never seen because it was too dark in the woods, and the father returned uphill. The neighbor's dog was never seen again.
Former Michigan native recalls possible activity near National City
When the witness was about nine, she was walking with an older neighbor girl in the back portion of family property. Something nearby growled loudly at them, and after they walked about 200 feet into the front pasture it growled and shrieked again. The companion looked, exclaimed, then grabbed the witness and ran with her to the house. The witness never learned what the companion may have seen, and the companion never walked there with her again.
