Group of climbers hear possible vocalizations near Cougar

The witness and four companions camped on a logging spur to climb Mount St Helens. Around 2-3 a.m., the witness and one companion awoke to very loud, distant, deep howling that lasted about 15 minutes. They had not heard the sound before and ruled out cougar and elk, tentatively considering a bear but finding it too loud for a bear at that distance. No visual contact or physical evidence was reported, and the sound was heard on only one of three nights at the site.

A couple camping with their children woke around 3 a.m. to repeated loud, deep yells lasting several seconds each. About 10-15 minutes later they heard an extremely loud bang from a nearby hill that sounded like wood striking a large tree. Other campers nearby reacted with alarm and left early the next morning, while the host suggested sirens.

Late at night in July 2007 the witness was watching television at home while his spouse slept in another room with a window open. Both were startled by an extremely loud scream coming from outside that corner of the house. The witness went outside to investigate but found nothing. Years later the couple heard purported recordings on television that they felt matched the sound exactly.

The witness was searching for relics with metal detectors in a swampy coastal area when separated from two companions. He reports hearing two loud deep ape-like whoops followed by stick-against-tree impacts about 100 yards away and then again farther toward the river. He also notes smelling a foul stench shortly before the sounds while acknowledging it might have had another source.

The witness and his father were camped with children when they heard a large presence near camp at night. The two men took guns to investigate and saw a large man-like silhouette in brush about 100 feet away, which moved quickly away through thick brush. The next morning they found large footprints, high claw marks on trees, and a stump torn apart with debris scattered, then stayed another night without further incident.

They approached the sound and saw a tall muscular figure that looked at them briefly before running away. The witness and a relative were bedded down in separate tents for the night with dogs present. Late at night the witness heard heavy footsteps with a large stride pass very close to the tent but saw nothing when looking out, while the relative reportedly saw the figure from the other tent. The dogs did not bark, which the witness found unusual. Four footprints were found the next morning.

The witness and two relatives were camping at the Sawmill Walk-in Campground east of Yosemite and talking around the camp table after sunset. From the forested canyon to the west they heard a series of about ten loud whoop-howl calls with pauses between them. Normal background wildlife noise stopped during the calls and resumed shortly after, with no answers or repeats and no visual contact.

The witness was descending from Seneca Rocks on a shortcut and became lost in rough rocky terrain. They heard heavy footsteps and branches cracking, then saw the back of a tall orange-brown haired creature moving uphill about 30 yards away. The creature continued uphill quickly over rocks and disappeared, and the witness returned to the trail to tell family.

Two companions camping in the woods heard large, heavy footsteps moving around their camp around 11:00. They threw rocks to scare it off, but it did not flee, and the companion's dog barked then whimpered. As they packed up with truck headlights on, they heard the movement recede then return closer with heavier footfalls, and small rocks were thrown toward them.

The witness was camping overnight with family near a reservoir when he and his companion heard repeated loud knocks like wood hitting wood from about 100 yards away for about 15 minutes as the sound moved away. He also reported distant howling that he could not confidently identify. The next morning he noticed broken logs and bent trees near the camp. His young child was asleep during the sounds and did not witness them.

The witness was sleeping in a cabin with five others when loud, high-pitched patterned screams and yelps woke five occupants. The group listened for several minutes before investigating; one occupant heard a loud thud against the cabin and a tennis ball was later found moved. A neighbor and a security guard came outside, and light shone into the trees coincided with the sounds stopping. The witness later compared the screams to unidentified recordings and suggested they could have been a Bigfoot.

The sounds then moved away and stopped. Companions later said they had also heard something but had dismissed it.

Family hears wood knocks and rock bangs

The witness and two relatives hiked a mountain trail and twice knocked a thick stick against a large fallen tree to imitate sounds described on a television show. On the return hike, a couple minutes after their second knocking, they heard a very loud banging reply accompanied by large cracking noises after each bang. Frightened, all three ran down the hill and left without seeing the source.

Two people walking toward Miner's Falls heard repeated wood-on-wood banging for about a minute. They saw a large limb held straight out and striking back and forth between two close-set trees about 20 feet away. One witness glimpsed a dark unidentified shape believed to be part of a dark arm that seemed to rise from leaning over before the noise stopped and moved away behind the trees.

The witness and his family were staying in a fifth-wheel trailer with the windows open on a cool cloudy night. Around 2 a.m. the witness heard loud scream-like howls from different directions that seemed to answer each other for about ten minutes while appearing to move. Dogs in a nearby town began barking almost immediately.

He estimated a single caller a quarter to a half mile to the southwest, noting dogs and livestock reacted to it before it stopped.

The witness was night-hiking on a familiar trail with two companions who became separated. The witness and a relative heard soft whistles and brush movement on a slight slope beside the trail. A very large boulder was then seen hurling through the air in front of them, followed by loud rustling as if something was coming downhill. They fled to the road and drove away, meeting the third companion who was also frightened.
