Possible vocalization and approach to tents reported by campers on private land near Pilot Mountain

Three people were camping overnight in a tent on private woodland. During the night one person left the tent with indigestion and rekindled the campfire while the others remained inside. All three then heard a loud high-pitched yelp from the woods immediately around the campsite, prompting the person outside to rush back into the tent. The group stayed quiet and heard nothing further.

Three people were camped overnight in a valley when they heard a deep growl followed by a howl. They then heard large branches or trees snapping and being thrown toward camp, followed by sounds of a small animal in distress and then silence. Finally they heard something large running away through the woods, breaking branches and rustling leaves. They saw nothing in the darkness and could not identify the source.

After dark the witness went down to a lake dock to remove a battery charger from a bass boat and shined a spotlight across the cove. He noticed a tall dark figure in 6 to 7 foot grass, whistled at it and heard a different whistle returned. When he looked back the figure was moving away through the weeds, and he ran back to the house.

The witness was hunting from a tree stand in the late afternoon when he heard very loud, unfamiliar yells from about 150-200 yards away. The yells repeated minutes later from apparently closer. He then watched a small sapling whip violently side to side for about a minute while surrounding grasses did not move similarly. Feeling uneasy as darkness approached, he climbed down and left the woods without ever seeing the source.

Two campers on a sandbar heard a loud scream, heavy bipedal footsteps and splashes in the creek after dark. When they left the tent with flashlights they saw large green eyes without visible pupils a short distance away on their path. After verbal warnings shots were fired toward the eyes, which advanced a few steps instead of fleeing, prompting the pair to call for help to leave the woods.

While leaving the woods they reported being followed by something unseen that produced howls and other vocals, stick-beating sounds, continuing footsteps, and moving vegetation.

The witness was outside with children near the barn just before sunset when a loud howl was heard from about 100 yards to the south. Five or six howls followed as the source moved over a mile in about two minutes, seeming to face the witness while moving downhill. They withdrew to a road and flagged a truck for a ride, believing they had entered Sasquatch territory.

He glimpsed a dark figure and then rocks began flying past him, prompting him to jog and then sprint toward a road. The pursuer kept pace while breaking saplings and trees before stopping near the road, after which the witness calmed down and returned to his car.

Late at night the witness stepped outside the house and heard a low, loud whooing vocalization coming from the river bottoms that lasted about a minute. As soon as the sound stopped, neighborhood dogs and distant coyotes began barking and howling at once. The witness stayed inside that night and found nothing further when checking the tree line the next morning.

In late summer 2006, two companions fishing from a canoe in the middle of a remote mountain lake heard a very loud, long growl-yell coming from a hillside. They froze and visually scanned the hillside for several minutes but saw no movement and heard no further sounds, then packed up and left. The witness stated neither person had heard a similar sound despite extensive time outdoors.

The witness was outside at the horse boarding property late at night when loud screams were heard from the west toward the river. The witness first thought of a woman screaming but judged the sounds as not human. About 20 horses became agitated and stared west while the witness's dog growled with raised hackles, and the dog remained wary toward the same area the next morning. No creature was seen.

Four men arrived after dark at a family property for an elk hunt and built a campfire. They heard heavy footfalls and branch breaking approaching from a draw, then saw a large light-colored upright figure about 40 feet away at the edge of the firelight. The figure crouched, turned to look at them, then stood and walked away quickly in a few steps. The group sheltered in a trailer and found no tracks the next morning.

After a few seconds it stood fully upright and ran bipedally into the pines, and the pair later heard bipedal running approaching the car before leaving.

Horses were heard bolting nearby and the witness's dog barked toward the woods while a faint zoo-like odor was smelled. The witness estimated the source was within a few hundred feet and said the sound was unlike any known animal and not believed to be human.

The witness and a relative were elk hunting and following two blood trails in a steep ravine at dusk. After a wounded bull ran past the witness, a very loud angry howl or growl came from the wooded hill below. The sound was described as far louder than an elk bugle and spooked horses in the area, and a strong foul odor was noted.
