A group of girls on a summer-camp hike entered a swamp-like area where they heard twigs snap, smelled a foul odor, and saw a dark hairy bipedal creature moving among trees. The creature paused and looked toward them after one girl screamed, and the group fled. A counselor later told them it was a bear, which the witness doubted because it walked on two legs and was in a swamp.

They turned back, stopped near the trees, and listened to repeated 4- to 5-second shrieks that sounded powerful and nearly human. Honking produced no change and the sound faltered then stopped after the witness shouted loudly twice, and it was not heard again on a later check. The source was not seen because it was dark and about 15 yards away at the far edge of the trees.

It jumped a barbed-wire fence and ran on all fours through tall grass as she followed by truck before it veered toward a creek and disappeared.

The witness left a relative's house late at night to walk about 50 yards to his own house. He heard a loud thumping and then what sounded like bipedal footsteps moving toward him from the trail area. He ran home, locked the door, and sat to calm down. He later interpreted the encounter as a sasquatch following or chasing him.
