In 1977 the witness, an Army instructor at Fort Lewis, was alone grading trainees on a night exercise when he smelled a foul rotten-egg odor and heard brush rustling and branches breaking. He saw a pair of eyes staring at him as a creature moved left to right in front of him, then left the area, after which the odor and sounds stopped. He was frightened and hid, and a next-day search found no tracks.

After headlights showed nothing, the odor and sense of unease lifted and the family returned to the tent for the night before breaking camp the next day.

After dark they smelled a strong stench and heard grunting, hooting and stomping that seemed to surround their tent, but saw nothing when checking with a flashlight. Nothing was seen because it was pitch dark.

Five people were camping together at dawn when they heard rapid crashing and thrashing through nearby underbrush with snapping twigs. In July 1977 the witness was helping a relative fix fence on a hill behind the ranch around noon. He and the relative saw two tall pine trees sway inside the fence line and then heard a loud yelling uhhing sound. The witness and a companion who had left a training area early saw three large silhouetted figures across a moonlit meadow near a tree line. When approached, the figures moved toward them silently without answering, frightening both witnesses.
