The witness and a companion sat around a campfire at night in a parking lot study area. From about 200 feet away they heard growl-whoop-scream vocalizations and wood-on-wood thumps, followed later by pea gravel striking the truck. Trail cameras reportedly captured gravel in motion and a large black partial figure showing shoulder, arm and open hand.

Over several nights in December the witness and their partner sat on their home lanai at night and heard a loud cry or scream, rock-clacking sounds, and stones or pebbles striking the house and lanai, and noticed a strange unknown odor for two days. No creature was seen. An investigator later visited the property, found a displaced rock, a single possible footprint, and nearby scat, and noted the property backs onto a power-line corridor.

The witness stayed awake afraid until daylight and left quickly in the morning.

The witness was canoeing alone on the river in the afternoon and had to pull out to drag the canoe around a log jam. He smelled a terrible odor and was paced by something unseen that stopped when he stopped, then heard screaming, breaking limbs, and saw a large log thrown and trees violently shaking. He fled in the canoe to the center of the river.

A deer hunter in scent-masking clothes and a ghillie suit was set up on a rock overlooking a saddle at daybreak. A large dark ape-like animal threw a stick that landed behind him, then charged after he shouted and pointed his muzzleloader. He fired in front of it to deter it; it stopped, stood, grunted, and a smaller one emerged crying before both left. He abandoned his gear and found it ransacked the next day.

Throughout spring 2004 the witness and several neighbors repeatedly heard what sounded like a bipedal creature walking through woods at night, often while area dogs barked intensely. The investigator describes a 2000 case near Smith Mountain Lake involving a family experiencing poltergeist activity, orbs in the hallway, triangular UFOs and lights in the woods, crop circles, and woman-like screams. The witness approached and found a crouched hairy animal that then stood upright on two feet and ran into the woods, knocking down trees amid screaming. The next morning they found no tracks but noticed a large log newly present near their vehicle by the spring.
