A woman camping along a game trail near Paulina Peak reportedly heard a terrific scream in the early morning hours about eight years before the report. She reported the sound to Forest Service rangers, who showed her a plaster track cast from a separate road-crossing sighting and suggested it could explain what she heard. An investigator later tried to follow up on the ranger lead but could not obtain further information.
