While serving as rear patrol member at night in a training area, the witness heard something following and then flanking the patrol. The patrol stopped, smelled a musty swampy odor, and performed a break-contact drill firing blanks while running to extraction. The commander later dismissed it as probably a bear.

After dinner the two children left camp to search for the father and reached a forest road clearing with birch trees. They watched a small thin dark-haired figure climb down a tree, screech, run on all fours, toss a stick, then continue bipedally behind a tree and disappear as the woods fell silent. They returned after dark and the father dismissed their account.

The witness returned with two companions to look for antler sheds and entered an unfamiliar valley cutout. They found a complete picked-clean deer skeleton in a muddy patch surrounded by deep heel-only prints about the witness's foot size. The witness took the skull and left feeling uneasy.
