Two riders got their bike and 4-wheeler stuck in a pit in a reclaimed strip mine. While working to free them they saw a large brown figure walking along the top of the highwall, crouch down behind a tree and watch them. After about an hour it stood and walked away the way it came, and the riders later left the same direction.

While hunting alone along railroad tracks in late fall, the witness heard rustling and then footsteps paralleling his movement through the woods. The source kept pace at a distance, stopping when he stopped and moving when he moved, with heavy footfalls and loud branch breaking. It followed him to the edge of an open field near his parked truck. He never saw the source and called out without reply.

Two of the men observed one figure at close range, about nine feet away, shining a flashlight on its face, noting yellow eyes and a dragging right leg. In summer 1987, the witness and two companions were resting on a rock after swimming and fishing at a swimming hole on the Gauley River when the area went quiet. They saw a large, dark-brown, two-legged animal standing in a clearing across the river watching them for about two minutes before it left up the bank and out of hearing up the hillside. The next day the witness revisited the spot and judged the animal had been at least seven feet tall.

Two companions were camped for bass fishing at a remote pond in the national forest when they heard loud repeated whooping calls, first from up the mountain and later from less than 50 feet behind their tent. They remained still in the tent while the close calls continued for several minutes before silence returned. In the morning they found their fuel can neatly covered with stacked stones and a stringered fish missing, which they attributed to the unseen caller.
