When he neared the deer he heard a loud guttural growl that repeated and blocked approach. His father and brother joined him, all heard it, and they quickly loaded the deer and left.

A very loud growl or roar erupted from very close range and was felt physically in their bodies. Both stopped without speaking, turned, and hurried back to the house without seeing the source.
