The father stopped, got out and fired several pistol shots as it fled around a bend, after which it gave a loud roar or scream. The group continued to camp for three days, during which the father remained nervous and jumped up armed during the night.

The incident was dated to about 1950 and was retold decades later by a local who had heard the story lifelong.
