A Coast Salish elder told the guest that as a young boy south of Nanaimo he found a small hair-covered creature sitting on a cedar fence railing by a beach river. When it saw him it jumped down, put a hand in front of its face, and ran into the forest. The elder called it Steamtum.
Odor
The guest relays a story about a bushman who was in a forest by a salmon stream. The party smelled strong licorice, found fresh little footprints in sand with water still flowing in, and heard chattering and brush rustling without seeing anything.
Tracks
While following what looked like a killed deer across a creek, the witness found large canine-like tracks and a small human-like footprint with a pressed circle. He found more blood further on, then heard growling from dense brush he could not see through, so he backed away.
Howl
To address suspected coyotes, four large hound dogs were released on the property. They were heard howling, then yips and a huge roar, then silence. The next morning all four dead dogs were found piled in the middle of the property road, some mutilated.
Property disturbance
The man who previously owned the property said wounded deer that ran into a marked area vanished without a blood trail. Dogs sent into that area, including collared tracking dogs, also vanished. The collars would stop suddenly and neither collar nor dog was recovered.
Tree break
On his own large private property the witness found a marked sapling deliberately broken above his ribbon. He also found trees uprooted, turned upside down, and reset firmly in the ground. He treats an area beyond those trees as a boundary he does not cross.

While cleaning hunting blinds the witness followed strange sign thinking it was a poacher. The trail led into a narrow passage between a slough and creek. He found himself facing a very tall creature with a smaller one behind it and two more flanking him, then backed away and fled.
Vocalization
After creatures tore open the back of a sheep barn and killed many sheep, the farmer waited inside with a shotgun. The witness heard two shots and a scream at night. Responders later found only the smashed gun and part of a bloody shirt, and the man was never found.

A timber cruiser for a paper company went missing in the valley. Searchers sent to find him were chased out by creatures. After a posse formed, one man was killed by a thrown tree and others were hurt, then locals burned a large area to drive the creatures out.

As a boy the grandfather heard his pet jenny in distress in the back field. He crested a hill and saw a large hairy creature holding the animal with its neck twisted. The creature threw the heavy animal over its shoulder and walked toward the woods.

The witness and his younger cousin snuck into a forbidden area to hunt a large buck from a tall metal stand. They smelled a strong odor and watched a hairy creature emerge in pines about 75 yards away. After the cousin accidentally fired buckshot, the creature charged, smashed the stand legs, destroyed both guns, and the boys fled home.

This is a traditional First Nation legend about a couple blessed with a nose-born boy who was teased. When village children stayed out playing after sunset, a hairy wild woman of the woods seized them in a sack. The boy cut the sack open and, with help from deer, bear and mink, led the children back, after which the chief ordered him respected.

While trolling for trout in the fall, visitors heard tree knocks and branches being broken nearby. They returned a couple weeks later in late fall and heard activity again.

A woman reported ape-like creatures around her home that banged on the house. After outside researchers visited and fired shots, the behavior escalated. Her dog was found dead with a broken neck, rocks were thrown, and creatures growled at windows in early morning hours.
