Police were called and during the subsequent search an officer saw a tall man-like figure run across a highway. A later visitor examined a cast and said weight distribution argued against a fake shoe.

Around sunrise a small black furry animal about three feet tall near the tree stood up on two legs, then dropped to all fours and ran toward cover, disappearing silently. While hunting, the witness saw an elk flee followed by a large dark-brownish animal running about 50 feet beyond it at roughly 300 feet distance, observed briefly through a rifle scope. The witness later found bent grass and a single partial footprint with three toes at the base of an old tree where the animal had run. Three nearby hunters said they saw nothing.
