The witness, suffering back pain while elk hunting, crawled to a sunny clearing and rested against a low stump. For over an hour, softball-sized rocks were thrown from the treeline at intervals under a minute, striking trees about eight feet up and landing nearby, with no other noise. The witness radioed his brother, who arrived and jointly watched the rock-throwing continue for about 30 minutes. Afterward they searched toward the source but found no tracks due to rocky ground and saw no thrower.
