It reappeared swaying and clicking, then leapt a great distance and ran off on all fours. Authorities and later visitors called it a bear and told them to leave it alone.

One figure was seen behind a truck and one coworker was startled by movement in brush, with no one seriously hurt.

They tracked through the Mount Hood area, cornered one of several animals, shot it, and removed it by helicopter. After motoring to an island to confront who they thought was a person, a very large black hairy biped stepped out, screamed, charged and struck one cousin, breaking ribs and puncturing a lung, then threw a log that cut his chin. The creature reappeared, swayed and made clicking mouth sounds, then leapt about twenty feet and ran away on all fours for several hundred yards in seconds.
