The witness and three companions were driving north on Highway 441/71 into Tennessee toward Gatlinburg around dusk. From a distance they saw a very tall, large, hairy, ape-like figure crossing the highway from left to right on two feet, illuminated by street lights ahead. They reported a clear view from the shadow side but could see nothing at the crossing point when they drove up due to darkness.

After stopping to look for tracks without success, they reported the sighting to patrons at a nearby tavern who did not believe them.

A large hairy biped was seen backlit by an approaching car's headlights as it ran upright across the road about 130 feet away, and the car slowed as if its occupants also saw it. The witness then went outside to bring in a dog, noticed a bad odor, and later searches found no footprints.

The creature bounded across the two-lane highway and leaped from near the center line to the roadside bank. While driving out on the park access road, the witness saw a large hairy upright figure standing beside the road. The witness was driving slowly on a dirt road at night while looking for a place to camp when an ape-like animal crossed the road in front of the vehicle.
