A very loud yell came from just behind their lean-to, which shook visibly, causing the group to flee through the dark woods. The next day the group found the lean-to torn down, the fire pit rocks scattered, and a strong wet-dog-like odor at the site.

As they walked back to the vehicle near dark they heard something moving parallel in the undergrowth, then heard a loud scream from very close range, prompting them to fumble with their unloaded guns and leave quickly.

The most intense moment was a predawn episode with a deep guttural roar followed by a scream-like sound near camp. They left early after smelling the odor again near a plum thicket.
