While hunting deer until dark, the witness heard owl-like hoots and a howl and then hit a tree with a branch to make knocks. While walking out the witness noticed bent trees and broken branches resembling a stick structure. A few minutes later two loud knocks and a drawn-out yip, also described as including a whoop, were heard from behind, after which the witness hurried back to the truck.

The witness stopped at a rest area in fresh snow to let a dog out and found large tracks in three paths with a wide spread. The witness estimated the prints at 15.5 inches long with 5- to 7-foot increments and judged no known animal could have made them. The witness returned days later to photograph the prints with scale items and reported a possible nest near a ravine, then reported the find for investigation.

The witness and a relative were scouting a remote abandoned strip-mine farm for deer hunting when they followed splitting paths to the top of a spoil bank and found a woven, igloo-shaped shelter made of thorny vines with an entrance and cleared interior. They could not explain who would have built it in dense thorny vegetation with biting insects. The witness and a companion hiked through a creek bed to a long-visited spot in the woods. They found a large area where tall weeds and trees had been matted down into a bed-like clearing with outer vegetation bent outward. While examining it they heard heavy bipedal footsteps and breaking twigs approaching through dense foliage but could not see the source. They retreated to the road while the unseen source followed at a distance, staying about 100 feet away.
