A solo hiker descending a high mountain trail heard a very loud scream-growl vocalization and stopped to scan. He saw a tall, hairy biped about 50 yards away at the forest edge staring at him for several seconds, tilting its head before turning and running fast into the pines out of sight. He then continued down the trail anxiously without photographing it.

After returning to camp toward dusk the couple heard howl-like sounds circling and closing in, built a fire, and the husband on a wood run saw large widely spaced yellow eyes of something crouched nearby. In September 2000 the witness was near home bordering extensive forest when a long howl was heard approaching from a distance at dusk. The witness went into the woods with two dogs, a spotlight and a weapon to intercept what was first assumed to be a hunter's dog, but saw no hunter lights while the sound moved rapidly to within about 120 yards on the same level. The dogs behaved unusually and the witness felt terror, concluding the source was not a known dog or coyote, a view reinforced by later failure to match the sound to recorded wolf sounds and by nearby residents reporting similar howls.
