He noticed a dark form moving in the treeline and called out, thinking it was the landowner, then moved to a power-line opening for a clearer view. The figure paused and stared for about 10 seconds, appearing as a 6-7 foot tall biped covered in long dark brown fur/hair, before walking away into the trees.

The witness and a companion were backpacking and bushwhacking toward a fire road in the evening. After hearing a strange whistle and footsteps near a stream, they stopped in a meadow. In 1979 the witness had moved ahead of a hiking group in the Adirondacks to watch beavers and was walking back to the main trail. During a nighttime military evasion exercise, the witness walked forward to look for his sergeant and heard heavy footsteps. A large dark hulking figure appeared briefly at the end of a clearing about 50 feet away and ran about 20 feet into the woods. The sergeant arrived from another angle and also reported seeing a dark form running away, and both later agreed it was not a deer, bear, human or other animal.

Two siblings were playing in a wooded valley by a stream on a family farm in late afternoon when they felt uneasy and heard a loud stick break. As they tried to leave over a fence, the reporter came face-to-face with a huge black hairy figure crouched behind a tree and screamed. During the night a large-sounding movement was heard outside that agitated the dogs for about fifteen minutes, but the witness did not look outside. The next morning the witness found a line of large five-toed footprints in snow that appeared to pass the cabin, step over a barbed-wire fence, and jump a creek before continuing uphill, but heavy snow later covered them.

A child playing a night game ran behind a maintenance shed and heard gravel move. About ten feet away, a huge dark figure crouched at chained garbage cans rose smoothly to stand very tall. The witness fled to tell adults, who suggested it was a bear or a person watching the children.
