Four ape-like animals repeatedly approached the trailers, peered in windows, vocalized at night, left tracks, damaged structures, and killed livestock. The father shot the largest animal in the shoulder near the pump house, after which the animals moved faster and more cautiously but continued the activity. Forestry and law-enforcement visitors reportedly told the father to stop shooting, and timber workers and well drillers also encountered the animals.

Four teenagers were bedded down in a small wall tent during a hiking trip when they heard heavy footsteps circling the tent three times. The steps brushed against the tent fabric without tripping on the supporting ropes, and no flashlight was seen in the darkness.
