Late at night in fall 2003 the witness walked about 25 feet from the remote cabin to the tree line to relieve himself. He heard very loud heavy stomping or bounding from about 25 yards away at the base of a hillside that shook the ground and stopped after a few seconds when he turned toward it. He saw nothing further, felt uneasy, and went back inside and locked the cabin.

After exiting the vehicle in suddenly calm conditions, the witness heard steps growing louder followed by a loud repeated groaning sound. The occupants remained inside in fear and later closed windows and fell asleep; companions camped nearby said they heard nothing.
