Residents in a Campbell County community reported a large ape-like primate on the loose over several weeks in autumn 2003. One resident reported seeing the animal at close range, noting a strong odor, and said it threw a kitten toward them. Other reports described a home intrusion with scattered belongings, stool deposits on property, and many missing or dead cats and kittens. Animal control and the sheriff's department investigated and warned residents not to approach the animal.

As the truck approached, the creature was seen crouched over what looked like a dead deer and then turned to look toward the vehicle. Three young men were camping by a pond at night when they heard a loud moaning yell twice, followed by fast bipedal footsteps approaching. They turned on the truck's headlights and saw a six-foot-tall hair-covered creature with long arms about 20 yards away in a hollow. After watching for about 10 seconds, they fled in the truck.

In the early morning the witness was at a rental mobile home property with his wife to check on tenants and let dogs out. The dogs refused to leave the porch while reacting to movement in an adjacent tobacco field. The witness saw a large hunched furred figure with a rounded back in the field and a smaller figure moving away, and heard exchanging chuffing vocalizations and a distressed mewling sound from the field and from across the road near a creek. The figures moved toward tall grass and the tree line, a tree across the road shook as if climbed, a musty odor was noticed, and mashed grass trails were found the next morning.

The witness and three companions were driving north on Highway 441/71 into Tennessee toward Gatlinburg around dusk. From a distance they saw a very tall, large, hairy, ape-like figure crossing the highway from left to right on two feet, illuminated by street lights ahead. They reported a clear view from the shadow side but could see nothing at the crossing point when they drove up due to darkness.

The witness was sitting at a mountain camp near water around midday when they noticed a bear-like odor and spotted movement on a nearby ridge. A dark, almost black figure initially mistaken for a man stood up from the ground and walked calmly across the ridgetop, close enough for footstep sounds to be heard, before descending out of sight. The witness emphasized the figure was much larger than a bear.

Two men had finished dredging for gold and were talking when they noticed a large dark creature about 100 feet away partly behind a dead tree and tailings pile. The creature reached up and snapped off a tree limb, looked at them for 10 to 20 seconds while a strong smell was present, then turned and walked into the woods. They stayed in the area for two more weeks with no further sightings but reported smelling it several times.

A couple were trolling slowly by boat up a flooded channel while fishing. The husband saw a dark bulky figure hunched behind brush watching them, while the wife experienced birds going quiet and then saw bushes moving up into the woods as something left quickly. The witness and a friend went out at night to search for the witness's father who had not returned from fishing. While searching along the creek they heard an unfamiliar clicking sound and saw two sets of large red eyes on the far river bank. They found the father deceased beside his boat and later learned he had suffered a heart attack. The witness believed the unknown creatures were watching over his father and had helped him locate the body.
