The witness and a companion were hiking a high-elevation trail with two dogs when they heard a very loud, rhythmic wailing and moaning sound from a pine cluster about 50-75 yards away. The sound lasted several minutes and seemed to move toward them, growing louder, which frightened the witness and held the dogs' fixed attention without prompting a chase. They left without seeing the source, and minutes later a ranger they met said she had also heard the unfamiliar sound.

The witness and her husband were camping in a dispersed site when they heard a prolonged strange vocalization that moved along a rocky creek bed from one side of camp to the other over several hours. Their dogs acted frightened, trying to get into the tent rather than barking. The witness compared the sound to a recorded scream from a nearby county and could not identify it as a known animal.

The writer heard the movement but did not see it; the companion briefly saw only the dark top of its head or back above tall shrubs. The writer interprets the three incidents as one animal trailing them through the day.

The witness and three companions stopped while driving on a logging road and heard a loud deep wailing or warbling sound from the hillside below. The witness took a rifle and went downhill, finding a rocky crevice with a very strong foul odor. Something large and fast then rushed from behind the rock downhill, perceived only as a brief brown blur, and no recent animal sign was found.

Two backpackers hiked off trail and camped in a small canyon in Redwood National Park. Around 7 p.m. they heard a short scream nearby, after which the forest became very quiet. Around 10:30-11 p.m. they heard prolonged rhythmic wailing or howling from a surrounding ridge for several minutes before going to sleep and leaving the next morning.

The witness and a companion were surveying a property line early in the morning when they saw a creature standing beside a large bush near a drying bayou about eighty feet away. One of them shouted at it and it fled north. Tracks and hair found at the site were later documented by an investigator, with the hair analysis determining the hairs were bovine.

Two hikers with a dog descended from the continental divide into a boggy meadow beside a large stream. They heard noises from the opposite bank and then saw a large hairy brown-and-black animal watch them for several seconds. The animal then moved away downstream through brush on two legs with a long loping gait. The witness noted the dog remained calm, unlike its usual reaction to wild animals.

The witness was hiking alone in forested land around old iron mines and found fresh tracks in rocky sand, including small six-toed prints and three very large prints nearby. After examining the tracks, the witness sat on a clifftop for a couple of hours and heard an extremely loud harsh howl or screech likened to recorded sounds heard on the radio. Frightened, the witness left the area quickly.

Something ran across gravel behind them, slapped the side of their parked pickup three times, and shook branches while heavy footsteps were felt. After reaching the truck to leave, they heard a loud, close, high-pitched unearthly scream and drove away quickly.

Two companions paddled a small boat up a remote swampy creek in the late afternoon. A large rock was thrown from the wooded bank and splashed into the creek ahead of them, after which one of them fired warning shots and they turned back. As they paddled back after dark, they heard heavy footsteps in the woods that stopped when they stopped paddling and resumed when they paddled, continuing until they reached the road.

Gold dredgers have afternoon encounter in Cherokee National Forest

Two men had finished dredging for gold and were talking when they noticed a large dark creature about 100 feet away partly behind a dead tree and tailings pile. The creature reached up and snapped off a tree limb, looked at them for 10 to 20 seconds while a strong smell was present, then turned and walked into the woods. They stayed in the area for two more weeks with no further sightings but reported smelling it several times.

Minutes after the sounds stopped, a foul rotting odor drifted through camp while the forest remained completely silent.
