At night after the woods went quiet, something heavy approached bipedally, roared, reached through pines shaking and pulling them, and lunged with huge hands. He knelt and put his shotgun in its midsection but did not fire when it backed off, then it screamed, circled the camp throwing trees, iron-ore rocks and dirt while they kept a bonfire burning until early morning.

As they approached closely they noticed a strong odor and had sticks thrown toward them, though the animals remained unseen.

As he approached he saw something crouched just beyond the site that jumped up and ran away on two feet. He was startled, eased in to get the knife, and later said he could never explain the tall dark figure.

While recovering the animal he heard loud repeated grunting nearby that he did not believe was deer and could not see the source. He became frightened, dragged the deer about a hundred yards to the gate, and waited urgently for pickup.

The witness was on an afternoon deer hunt from a box stand accessed by a power-line right-of-way, after taking a bobcat and shooting at a doe. After dark he walked out and entered a sharply defined wall of strong livestock-like odor that appeared and disappeared within about ten feet. He returned later with a companion who smelled the same odor in the same low spot, with no sound or sight of an animal.
