From about 400 yards away on another ridge, the witness watched a very large, very dark upright figure for several minutes. The figure was first mistaken for a bear but kept walking upright too long to be a bear, paused to manipulate a tree limb, then walked over the ridge and was not seen again.

The driver braked and alerted the companion, who saw only a brief glimpse as it entered dense woods. The driver searched the crossing point with a flashlight but found no tracks or other sign.

The witness and the witness's father were moving slowly upriver by boat when the witness spotted a hairy figure crouched on the bank. They made brief eye contact before the figure dove into the river with arms extended and disappeared. The men went to the spot and found only smears in the clay, then waited about 20 minutes without it resurfacing.
